The Wainuiomata Marae Papakāinga Project is a partnership-led housing development delivering 12 new papakāinga homes and supporting infrastructure at Wainuiomata Marae. The project is focused on supporting whānau housing needs, cultural wellbeing and positive long-term outcomes for the Marae community, while also contributing to housing affordability, training opportunities and wider community outcomes across Wainuiomata.
The project reflects the vision and aspirations of the Wainuiomata Marae Trustees, who have remained actively involved throughout its development and delivery. The Trustees are supported by a Marae Trustee-appointed Project Manager, who provides an important link between the Marae, UPL and the wider project team and helps ensure the Marae’s interests and aspirations remain represented through the project management and decision-making process.
The project has also benefited from the support of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD) and Te Puni Kōkiri (TPK), together with housing and funding initiatives established under the previous Government, helping enable the project to progress from planning into construction.
Urban Plus Limited (UPL) has played a central role in progressing the project from early planning and partnership discussions through design, consenting, procurement and civil works, and now into the main construction phase.
Acting as development manager and delivery partner, UPL’s role extends beyond traditional project management. UPL has coordinated the commercial, technical, procurement, governance and construction workstreams required to turn the project’s aspirations into a deliverable development programme.
The Wainuiomata Marae Papakāinga Project demonstrates UPL’s ability to deliver more than conventional residential development. It reflects our capability to work as a trusted development partner, combining commercial and technical expertise with collaborative decision-making, cultural awareness and strong project governance.
From the early conversations with Wainuiomata Marae through to homes now taking shape on site, UPL has worked alongside the project partners to navigate the complexities of development while maintaining a clear focus on budget, programme, quality and the aspirations of the Marae.
Beyond the delivery of the 12 homes, the project also provides an opportunity to support improved housing affordability in the wider Wainuiomata community, while creating opportunities for local employment, training, skills development and pathways into the construction sector.
With construction progressing, the project is moving closer to delivering 12 new papakāinga homes for the Wainuiomata Marae whānau, creating lasting housing and community outcomes for generations to come.
