Timeframe:
August 2009 – February 2010

We are currently refurbishing our 22 housing units at 84 Bell Road as well as building four new units.

WelTec is managing the building work on site for us and WelTec students are constructing the new units and helping to refurbish the existing homes. This work will ensure the homes are warmer, more modern and provide better access for our tenants.

The students will be working in conjunction with professionals who will help install the services to the new homes and will undertake the landscaping.

Work being done at Bell Road includes:

  • replacing broken and damaged pipes to minimise subsidence
  • re-piling
  • re-roofing
  • replacement of weatherboards
  • replacement of windows
  • new insulation
  • new wet floor bathrooms
  • ramp access
  • mobility scooter docks
  • newly configured kitchens
  • putting four new one bedroom units on site
  • additional carparking
  • landscaping by Parks and Open Spaces Ltd.

The addition of the four new units is the first step towards increasing the number of social housing units provided by urbanplus in Lower Hutt from 187 to 210.

Once the work at Bell Road is completed we will house new tenants in the new units.

    • Replacing the rotten weatherboards is just one of many of the planned improvements.

    • Special delivery for Bell Road tenants. This two unit dwelling built by WelTec carpentry students arrives on site and will be connected to services before tenants move in while their homes are being renovated.
    • Hutt City Mayor David Ogden talks to Dave Tuari one of the WelTec students about the finer points of house building.
